It is unclear exactly when the Patty Melt was born, but historical records show that they were commercially introduced in the 1940s.

Other people may add another type of sandwich topping, like fresh spinach or cucumbers.
How is it cooked? In general, all you have to do to make a skillet is cook the meat and breads on one side while adding the other ingredients and putting them on top of the heated skillet. It may take a few minutes to mix everything together and then you can remove it from the heat. You can serve this with eggs, hash browns, vegetables and toast. A variation of this sandwich is to make a grilled cheese sandwich, which calls for half a cup of softened butter and half a slice of cheese on top of the melt. This can be served with another ingredient that complements the cheese – like swiss cheese, olives and tomato.
Is it an authentic, old-fashioned Irish treat? You bet! What is also common these days is the addition of caramelized onions to the ingredients, which gives them a slightly sweet flavor. It works really well, because caramelized onions add their own unique, smoky flavor to a patty melt.
